Translating Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research into Clinical Medicine

2009

Recent studies have provided important insights into the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The development of new therapeutic agents has been triggered by basic research and studies in mouse models of IBD. It is expected that improved translational research will lead to optimized therapy and new individualized treatment options.

Risk factors and molecular characterization of penile cancer

2020

Purpose of review To provide a comprehensive summary of risk factors, molecular machinery as well as potential therapeutic targets with a particular focus on literature published in the last 2 years on prognosis and treatment of penile cancer (PeCa). Recent findings E2F, LAMC2, MAML2, ID1 and IGFBP2 proteins were demonstrated to play a critical role for aggressive tumor behavior and might predict poor survival in PeCa. PD-L1 axis was confirmed as a promising pathway to serve as a therapeutic target. A number of genetic alterations were illuminated. In clinical testing, pan-HER tyrosine kinase inhibitor dacomitinib provided promising results in chemo-naive and EGFR monoantibody nimotuzumab i…

Vertical gingival display changes associated with upper premolars extraction orthodontic treatment : a prospective clinical trial

2020

Background Extraction of upper bicuspids have been anecdotally blamed to increase the vertical gingival display (VGD) anteriorly. However, the extraction may be needed in some cases in order to correct the underlying orthodontic problem. Objectives: To investigate and compare vertical gingival display (VGD) changes associated with upper (first vs second) premolars extraction during orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods Design: A prospective clinical trial. Setting: Postgraduate dental teaching clinics at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). Sample population: Sixty orthodontic patients were included in the study. They were treated with upper first or second premolars ex…

Psicopatología de las compulsiones de lavado en el trastorno obsesivocompulsivo: no todos los pacientes lavan por los mismos motivos

2016

Abstract:  Psychopathology of washing compulsions in obsessive-compulsive disorder:  Not all patients wash for the same reasons.  Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous disorder in terms of the contents of obsessions and compulsions. Washing, being one of the most frequent compulsion modalities, has been associated with different variables such as: physical or mental contamination fears, fears associated with negative affect (including disgust) and the loss of control, a high level of perfectionism, or the avoidance of a sense of dirtiness or incompleteness. In this study, these variables are examined through the descriptive analysis of the psychopathological symptoms and tr…

The joint structure–function dynamics of glaucoma progression

2015

While the presence and rate of glaucoma progression influence treatment decisions, the methods currently available to detect and monitor progression are imprecise and do not allow clinicians to make accurate assessments of the status of their patients. Models that focus on combining structural and functional parameters may improve our ability to detect and monitor glaucoma progression. Several of these models, however, are limited by their reliance on population statistics and on the static assumptions they make about the nature of glaucoma progression. Dynamic modeling of glaucoma progression may lead to a better understanding of glaucoma progression that could eventually translate into ma…
